If you are like many homeowners, you could not imagine life without the convenience of your dishwasher. Unfortunately, perhaps your otherwise trusty dishwasher is beginning to not work correctly and is making some strange noises that have you concerned. Here are a few odd noises that might be coming from your dishwasher and the reason behind the noises.

Bumping or Thumping Noise During the Wash Cycle

If your dishwasher is making a noticeably loud bumping, banging, or thumping noise only during the wash cycle, there are several potential causes. For example, one of the most common reasons is that the sprayer arm is being obstructed during the wash cycle. This typically occurs because the dishwasher is overloaded, and simply putting fewer dishes into the dishwasher is the best way to prevent the problem.

However, another common cause is a damaged or obstructed chopping blade. The chopping blade cuts up any chunks of food that are washed off the dishes and is critical to prevent the drain hose from becoming clogged. If the chopping blade is damaged, it is important that you contact a professional to have this repaired. A broken chopping blade can cause large chunks of food to fall into the drainpipe, which can cause a serious clog.

Loud Grinding Noise

If your dishwasher is making a loud grinding noise, one of the most common causes is a blocked or damaged drain pump. The drain pump is critical to ensure the dirty water from the dishwasher is able to be brought down the drain. Unfortunately, if this is the issue, it will require the assistance of a professional to have the issue repaired.

A damaged or worn-out inlet valve, which controls the flow of hot water throughout the dishwasher, can also cause a loud grinding or squealing noise. This part typically cannot be repaired and should be replaced.

Buzzing or Vibrating Noise

Finally, if your dishwasher makes a very loud buzzing or vibrating noise, the issue could be something as simple as the dishwasher being out of balance. Like your washing machine, your dishwasher must be balanced correctly for it to work properly. In most cases, all you will need to do is adjust the legs, which are located on the front and back of the dishwasher. Place a level on top of the dishwasher and continue to adjust the legs until the dishwasher is completely level.

It is not uncommon for your dishwasher to make a strange noise. If your dishwasher is noisy and not working properly, contact a professional appliance repair technician for more assistance.
