A refrigerator is a major appliance in the home that you don't necessarily think too much about until it stops working and you are about to waste a lot of food that you have spent a good deal of money on. Your refrigerator holds a lot inside, and when you think about it all going bad, it can just about make you ill. If your refrigerator isn't working, there may be some things you can do to help repair it. Read on for a few common refrigerator issues that you may be able to repair yourself.

Warm Spots

If your refrigerator has warm spots in it, it can cause your food to be warm. Even though some areas are still cool, this is a problem, as it can warm up enough that your food is no longer safe for consumption. If you have warm spots, it could be that your vents are blocked in the refrigerator. The vents inside need to be open enough so that the air can circulate throughout your refrigerator and cool your food evenly throughout. If there are warm spots, check to be sure the vents are clear in both the refrigerator and the freezer. If you have too much food in your refrigerator, you need to remove some of it and either store it in another refrigerator or clean out what is no longer needed.

Door Not Sealing

If your door isn't sealing properly, you could also end up with warm spots in your refrigerator. Moisture can also get inside from the humidity in your home and lead to issues with your food as well. If your door isn't sealing, you need to replace the seal around the door. The door seal can crack and dry-rot over time. Remove the old seal and replace it with a new one. You can find a new one at your local appliance parts store. Remove the screws holding it in place and remove the old seal. Clean the door and then install the new seal around the door.

Refrigerator Leaking

If your refrigerator is thawing, you may think that you have a leak. You don't have a leak necessarily, you just have to ensure the drip pan is still beneath the refrigerator and that the evaporator coil is clean. Clean beneath your refrigerator and around all of the coils to be sure your refrigerator is thawing and evaporating properly.

If your refrigerator isn't working and you aren't able to make the repair yourself, you need to hire a professional to help with your fridge repair.
